SGYSL Receives State Award for CTA of the Year

Excerpt from The Dorchester Eagle-Record, December 13th, 2012

Members from St. George Youth Sports League (SGYSL) joined the United States Tennis Association SC (USTA SC) for an exciting weekend at USTA SC Annual Meeting in Isle of Palms. The tennis program in St. George received one of USTA’s most prestigious awards, the SC Community Tennis Association of the Year. In another surprise announcement, Mrs. Barbara Jones, Executive Director of SGYSL, was appointed to the USTA SC Board of Directors.
The annual meeting was held December 7th-10th in Wild Dunes Resort and consisted of committee meetings, networking opportunities and an Awards Ceremony. Other highlights were a round robin tennis tournament, tennis fashion show and Hall of Fame banquet. Mr. and Mrs. Grady Jones and Mr. Daniel Walters were in attendance for the entire event and volunteered to help with several tasks. The weekend included tennis organizers and professionals from all over the state of SC, which has over 23,000 active USTA player memberships.
SGYSL Director, Mrs. Barbara Jones, was ecstatic to receive the high honor of being named Presidential Appointee to the USTA SC Board of Directors. Current President, Al Marshall, commended Mrs. Jones on her amazing effort to grow the game of tennis in her small community and overcome many obstacles along the way. With this appointment, Mrs. Jones now sits on the board that makes some of the most important decisions for tennis in South Carolina.
The Awards Luncheon, held Saturday afternoon in the Palms Ballroom, was attended by nearly 200 invited guests. Those from St. George included Mayor Anne Johnston, Mr. and Mrs. Dion Straub, Mr. and Mrs. Shep Funderburk and Mr. and Mrs. Laren Clark. While accepting the award, SGYSL Vice-Chairman, Daniel Walters, humbly thanked the many people who contributed to the success of their organization. Among those he gave special recognition were Mayor Anne Johnston for her "tireless support of the tennis movement in our town." Mr. Walters also thanked staff members at USTA’s South Carolina office for their leadership and guidance, as well as other Tennis Associations throughout the state "for their gifts, support and encouragement." He reminded everyone that when people work together for a common good, success will follow.

The weekend was a big moment for one of the smallest CTAs in attendance, the St. George Youth Sports League. When Mr. Walters served as a model in the fashion show Friday evening, several people asked, "Where’s St. George?" When Mrs. Jones was appointed to the Board of Directors, many people said, "She’s from St. George." But when SGYSL won the CTA of the year award on Saturday, tennis fans throughout SC agreed....."St. George is on the tennis map!"
